For many years, management of Keratoconus comprised of prescribing rigid contact lenses until a corneal transplant, (graft) became inevitable. It was a little understood condition and no real treatment options were available. However, the advent of treatments such as Corneal Cross Linking (CXL) combined with refractive surgery has now revolutionised this situation, although many people undergoing such procedures still require contact lens correction. Additionally, some people with normal corneas undergoing refractive surgery techniques have post surgical problems which also require contact lenses. 
The hectic lifestyles of today require the best possible contact lens solution to corneal problems: this means good vision with comfort and long wearing times. Unlike "normal" contact lens wearers, if you have corneal irregularity, glasses just do not give you good vision – only contact lenses can do that, by providing a new, optically clear surface through which you can see.
Traditionally, rigid contact lenses have been used for this purpose, but new technologies in material, manufacture and design mean that you can achieve good visual quality and excellent comfort with soft contact lenses.
This can mean a significant increase in quality of life for many wearers. Even well fitting rigid lenses can be difficult to wear all day, every day all week long. For someone with Irregular Cornea, what is important is consistency of vision. Being able to rely on their lenses and not having to wonder if they will still be wearable in any given situation.
